PALANQUINS (Necropolis of Thebes-20th Dynasty)

Two patron saints of the Theban necropolis, the deified king Amenophis I and his mother, Queen Ahmosi Nefertari, are represented in the tomb of Nebamun and Imiseba, as well as in other Theban tombs. These popular saints were occasionally carried out of their shrines in the portable palanquins shown in this plate. During these processions, offerings were made to the saints who could pronounce oracles. The king is shielded by a sunshade, the queen by a canopy.
